Wreck of the Grosvenor
The East Indiaman Grosvenor met with misfortune when it sank, but the legend of its cargo persists. The ship, believed to be laden with treasures from India, wrecked off the coast of South Africa. While 123 survivors were repatriated, the ship’s wealth – estimated to include 2.6 million gold pagoda coins, 1,400 gold ingots and nineteen boxes of diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires – remains elusive. Sri Mookambika Temple, Karnataka

The temple has an annual income of 17 crores, with 35 crores reportedly spent on its development. Legends suggest that vast treasures are hidden within the temple, guarded by a mythical serpent.
