The NHL has a long history of welcoming brothers into the professional league. Sometimes, brothers have become rivals on competing teams, while others have shared the ice as teammates. There are even brothers who have achieved the distinction of winning a championship together while hoisting the Stanley Cup high.
Since the organization of the NHL in 1917, many brothers have shared the ice. Read on to learn more about some of the brothers who were also teammates.

1. Sutter Brothers
This list starts with the Sutter brothers.
There are actually seven brothers in the family, although only six have played in the NHL: Brent, Brian, Ron, Duane, Rich, and Darryl.

Between the brothers, six Stanley Cups were won as players, including in 1982 and 1983, when Duane and Brent teamed up on the Islanders to championship victories.
Rich and Ron were also teammates for a while, spending three years together philadelphia flyers in the 1980s and the other three with the St. Louis Blues, coached by Bryan.
2. Niedermayer brothers
Scott and Rob Niedermayer both found success in the NHL, including playing on the same team together.

He added, “I see him in the dressing room. He’s a bit more talkative and fun-loving than I’ve probably ever seen him before. It’s an area that’s a bit new to me.”
Before becoming teammates, they spent several years apart.
According to The Hockey News, Robb said, “In hockey season, since we were 15 or 16 years old, we went our separate ways.” “We’d see each other a little bit over the summer, but that was about it.”

3. Stahl Brothers
There are four Stahl brothers: Eric, Mark, Jordan, and Jared.
Several Sutter brothers have played for the Carolina Hurricanes.

4. Richard Brothers
The Richard brothers spent many years together as teammates.
Maury, nicknamed “Rocket,” performed his entire Career with Montreal Canadiens, From 1942 to 1960.
Henry, the younger brother, nicknamed “Pocket Rocket”, joined his brother with the Canadiens in 1955. According to NHL records, Henry won 11 Stanley Cups during his career, the most of any player. He retired from the league after the 1974–75 season.

5. Hughes Brothers
The Hughes brothers have taken the NHL by storm.
All three brothers were early selections in various NHL drafts.
Luke was the latest of the trio to join the NHL as the fourth overall pick in the 2021 draft New Jersey Devils.
In 2018, the eldest Hughes brother, Quinn, was selected by the Vancouver Canucks as the seventh overall pick. Jack was the first overall NHL draft pick by the Devils in 2019.

Luke and Jack both play for the Devils, while Quinn remains a part of the Canucks.
In late 2023, the three brothers shared the ice for the first time.
According to the New Jersey Devils’ website, Jack said before the game, “Of course you dream that you’re going to play with your brothers in the NHL one day.” “You’re in the basement, hanging out, playing, but you never think it’s going to become reality. For that to happen, it’s definitely pretty wild. It’s three kids in a game.”
According to the source, this family has become the ninth family to have at least three brothers playing the same sport. The last to do so before the Hughes brothers were the Stahl brothers in April of that year.
“I definitely didn’t expect something like this to happen when we were kids, but it’s really cool,” Luke said. “It’s the dedication our parents showed … how hard they worked and how hard all three of us worked. It’s going to be fun.”
“Of course, it’s the dream,” Quinn said of the game. “We probably talked about it when the kids were playing mini-sticks and stuff, but as far as this year goes, they want two points, I want two points, and everybody’s doing their individual things. Worried about the game.”

The Hughes brothers also made history as the first set of siblings to appear on an EA Sports cover in 2024.
“We are incredibly honored to be on the cover of NHL 25,” Quinn said, according to NHL.com. “Performing with my brothers is something you dream about as a kid but can never imagine happening in real life.”
