“The biggest accomplishment in my life is becoming a parent,” Rosa said. “I wanted to experience it. I wanted to have a family. I wanted to have kids. And I wasn’t allowed to do that. And then I realized, ‘Wait a minute. I only live one life.’ I don’t want to spend my life sacrificing for something I no longer believe in.’ That was the moment when I looked for possibilities of escape.”

Roza was born into a Kazakh-Tatar family of a high-ranking military officer of the Soviet Union. His grandfather fought against the Nazis during World War II, and his father is a high-ranking official over 45 years old. As a child, Rosa said, she was involved in a special government program for the children of high-ranking officials.

Strauss hopes the podcast will encourage other former female spies to come forward.
