Nuzzi addressed her old exes’ posts, saying, “I know a lot of journalists who made the smart decision a long time ago to delete all their old posts to protect themselves. I would never judge anyone for doing that. But a big part of my project as a journalist is meeting people where they are in the gray area and delving into the complexity and the nuance, and understanding the context as it is or as it was, and I see the effort to hide jokes I made five or 10 or 15 years ago in the context of the internet as a kind of dishonesty that I’m not comfortable engaging in.”

“I truly believe that if you want to live in a world that is forgiving and where people treat people they disagree with equally, you can’t give in to mob pressure to protect yourself, even though it’s very easy to do so,” Nuzzi said. “This kind of culture is created and sustained and as individuals we have to decide if we think it’s worth going through a little pain to fight against it.”

“After meeting with the president, they arrived at the same concern: Can he really do this for another four years? Can he even survive until Election Day? In common, these people were of the same social strata. They lived and socialized in Washington, New York and Los Angeles. They didn’t want to come forward with their stories. They didn’t want to tell anybody,” Nuzzi told readers.
