As San Francisco’s district attorney, Kamala Harris told lawful gun owners in her community that officers could go to their homes and check whether they were properly storing their firearms, under a new law she helped draft.
“We expect everyone in the community to behave responsibly, and just because you legally have a gun in your locked home doesn’t mean we won’t go into your home and see if you’re going about your business responsibly and safely,” Harris told a group of reporters in May 2007.
This comment came during an event. Press Conference Harris introduced a bill she helped draft that would impose penalties for gun owners who fail to properly store their firearms at home.
The bill, which was then presented to the city’s Board of Supervisors, was eventually passed. It was signed into law a few months later by then-San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom. It was paired with other gun control provisions, including a new requirement for legal gun distributors to submit a list to the police chief every six months and a ban on keeping guns — even legally owned — in public housing.
“San Francisco now has the strictest anti-gun laws in the entire county,” Newsom said in signing the new laws.
Harris shocked social media by saying she is a gun owner

At a May 2007 press conference discussing the safe storage bill, Harris said the new measure was about legalizing “our values” in an effort to “incentivize certain types of behavior.”
“When we legislate, it’s not just to provide an opportunity for someone to be prosecuted for committing a crime. More importantly, when we legislate for our values, it’s to encourage certain kinds of behaviour,” he said at the time.
Harris faced Criticism for statements Speaking about her “values” in November, she said they “haven’t changed,” while at the same time altering longstanding policies on nearly every front. Since becoming the Democratic nominee for president, Harris has tried to distance herself from President Biden and project a more moderate image of herself in an effort to appeal to a broader cross-section of voters.
“As he said in his interview last night, his values haven’t changed. He’s said that over and over again,” said Lora Rees, a journalist. border security expert at the Heritage Foundation told Fox News Digital after the CNN interview. “She’s telling her supporters, ‘Look, don’t worry about what the campaign is saying right now. We just have to say enough to win the election. But my values haven’t changed.'”

During last week’s presidential debate, Harris was asked by moderator Linsey Davis of ABC News about her changing stance on mandatory gun recalls, but she did not directly answer the question until former President Donald Trump continued to question her about his plan to “confiscate everybody’s guns.” Harris supported mandatory gun recalls when she ran for president in 2019, saying she “That’s a good idea.”
“This is about taking away everybody’s guns. Tim Walz and I are both gun owners. We’re not taking away anybody’s guns. So stop constantly lying about that,” Harris said in response to Trump’s criticisms.
Harris campaign spokesman James Singer told Fox News Digital that a potential Harris administration would “uphold and protect the law and the rights of Americans, including second Amendment.”
“The law requiring sensible gun storage in homes was upheld by Republican-appointed judges in the Ninth Circuit and declined to be reviewed by the Supreme Court,” he said. “As Vice President Harris said on the debate stage, she is a gun owner who supports common-sense safety laws that Donald Trump opposes.”

Harris has a long history of confrontation. National Rifle Association (NRA), It is considered by many to be the nation’s most powerful gun rights lobbying group. In 2009, the NRA challenged a San Francisco law banning guns from public housing and won. However, before its recent change under Trump, the Supreme Court had declined to hear an appeal from the NRA and other gun rights advocates after the 9th U.S. Circuit of Appeals rejected their petitions to relax San Francisco’s safe storage law.
“Law-abiding residents should have their guns disabled or inaccessible at the very time they are most needed for self-defense — in the middle of the night, when residents are asleep and obviously don’t have guns on them,” lawyers for the NRA and other gun rights advocates said at the time.

Meanwhile, a decision written by a 9th Circuit judge determined that the law “does not substantially prevent law-abiding citizens from using firearms to defend themselves at home.” The judge, appointed during the George W. Bush administration, said San Francisco had demonstrated that the law “serves the government’s important interest in reducing the number of gun-related injuries and deaths by allowing open carry of a gun in the home.”
