The reports are shocking: Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam

Temple executive officer Shamla Rao said contractors have been warned of strict action if they supply adulterated and substandard ghee.
“When I took over as the executive officer of TTD, the chief minister expressed concern over the quality of ghee and laddus procured, which are considered very holy and offered as ‘prasad’ to Lord Venkateswara Swamy. Any deviation in quality would lead to committing ‘apoornaya’ (doing something that is not holy). He wanted me to take steps to ensure that the sanctity of this temple is restored, including ghee made from pure cow milk. We started working on it.”
He said, “We found that we have no internal laboratory to check adulteration in ghee. There is no system to check the quality of ghee even in external laboratories… The rates quoted by the tenderers are impractical, they are so low that one can say that pure cow ghee cannot cost so low… We have warned all the suppliers that they will be blacklisted if the ghee supplied does not pass the laboratory test. We collected all the samples and sent it to the best laboratory, it is controlled by the government, and the reports have come and they are shocking.”
Rao also announced the formation of a four-member expert committee to monitor the ghee purchased by the temple.
He said, “The report said the ghee sample was adulterated with vegetable fat as well as animal fat. The animal fat included lard (pig fat), palm oil, beef fat and fish oil including grape seed and flaxseed. The ghee sample was a mixture of all these and the result was abnormally low. The reading of pure milk fat should be between 95.68 to 104.32, but all our ghee samples had values around 20, which means the ghee supplied was highly adulterated.”
He said, “We have started the process of blacklisting and penalising the supplier. We have formed an expert committee to improve the supply of ghee and strengthen our internal system so that we do not face this problem again… We have found suppliers who have passed the test… The expert committee has asked us to set up our own laboratory… This problem will be solved in future.”
