How did Israel kill Hezbollah commander Ibrahim Aqeel?
According to the IDF, the plan involved infiltrating Israeli communities and targeting civilians. “I can now confirm that Ibrahim Aqeel was killed along with other senior militants from Hezbollah’s Radwan Forces. Ibrahim Aqeel had the blood of many innocent people on his hands. Israelis, Americans, French, Lebanese and many more,” IDF spokesman RADM Daniel Hagari said hours after the attack.
The IDF stated their mission was to eliminate the threat posed by Hezbollah.
“Hezbollah is an internationally recognized terrorist organization. It poses a threat to the people of Israel, Lebanon, the Middle East and the entire world. Since October 8, Hezbollah has fired more than 8,000 rockets, missiles and explosive UAVs at Israeli civilians, forcing more than 60,000 Israelis to flee their homes. Today alone, Hezbollah has fired more than 200 rockets at Israel. The Israel Defense Forces have a duty to protect the Israeli people and ensure their safe return to their homes in northern Israel,” Hagri said.
The IDF spokesman accused Radwan forces of “planning to do in northern Israel what Hamas did in southern Israel on October 7, namely attacking Israeli homes and killing innocent people.” He also spoke about the criminal past of the killed commander.
He said, “During the 1980s, Aqeel was a leading member of the Islamic Jihad Organization, a terror cell of Hezbollah that claimed responsibility for the April 1983 bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, which killed 63 people, and the October 1983 bombing of the U.S. Marine barracks, which killed 241 American personnel. Ibrahim Aqeel also directed the kidnappings of Americans and Germans in Lebanon.”
The IDF indicated that Aqil and Radwan commanders were planning more attacks with the help of Hezbollah’s ‘Victory over Galilee offensive plan’ when they were targeted. “At the time of the attack, the commanders of the Aqil and Radwan forces were gathered underground under a residential building in the center of Dakha in Beirut and were hiding among Lebanese civilians, using them as human shields. They were planning more terror attacks against Israeli civilians,” Hagri said, adding that Israel’s focus is on “protecting the Israeli people” and “bringing the hostages back home and ensuring the permanent defeat of Hamas in Gaza.”

The IDF has also reported ongoing attacks on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, aimed at degrading its terrorist capabilities and infrastructure. The recent focus on these operations reflects a shift in Israel’s strategy towards securing the northern region. On Friday, Israel carried out a targeted attack on a Hezbollah stronghold in the southern part of Beirut, resulting in at least eight deaths and 17 injuries. Residents of the southern suburbs reported hearing a powerful explosion, followed by a thick plume of smoke rising over the Lebanese capital.
The attack was targeted at a specific location believed to be a stronghold of the Hezbollah terrorist group.
Meanwhile, in an earlier attack, Hezbollah launched a series of rocket attacks targeting various locations along the Israeli-Lebanese border. The Israeli military reported that the rockets were fired in three separate waves, with a total of 140 rockets fired.
According to the Israeli military, 120 missiles hit the areas of the Golan Heights, Safed and the Upper Galilee, some of which were intercepted. Firefighters were dispatched to put out fires caused by debris that fell in various locations. The military did not report any casualties or successful missile strikes on targets. An additional 20 missiles were launched at the areas of Meron and Netuya, most of which fell in open areas and no injuries were reported.
