Darian Urban, 21, and Shailene Ehlers, 20, are charged with felony counts of endangering the welfare of a minor and attempting to accept compensation for the abandonment of a minor.
The Benton County Sheriff’s Office said it received a call on September 21 from the manager of Hide Away Campground reporting that the couple “tried to give up the child for a 6-pack of beer and then wanted $1,000 for the child. ” For an affidavit, WREG reported.

The letter reads, “I, Darian Urban and Shailene Ehlers are signing over the rights of our child (redacted) to Cody Nathaniel Martin for $1,000 on 09/21/2024.” “Disclaimer: After signing this, neither of you will change your mind and will never have any further contact.”
According to the affidavit, multiple witnesses confirmed the adoption attempt.
When a deputy arrived at the scene the child was found to be in need of medical attention. The deputy called emergency medical services to take the child to the hospital to be evaluated for signs of neglect. The child is in the care of the Arkansas Department of Human Services.
One witness said she smelled a strong ammonia and feces smell coming from a child in a dirty diaper. The witness changed the baby’s diaper and observed severe diaper rash, blisters, and swelling, which she took photographs to document the injuries.

According to court documents, witnesses reported that campground resident Ricky Crawford had previously visited Urban and Ehlers and offered to take the child in for the night in exchange for several cans of beer.

It happened when Ehler allegedly approached another couple’s camper and asked them for a beer, as she often does. But when the couple refused, Crawford offered him beer in exchange for keeping the child with him overnight.

The affidavit reads, “Based on the totality of the investigation, it is believed that both Urban and Ehler committed suicide by leaving their minor child initially with an apparently intoxicated male and ultimately with someone who was in danger of death or Created a substantial risk of serious physical injury that they did not know existed.” ,
Martin told deputies he had the contract drawn up and while no money had yet exchanged hands, he planned to bring a $1,000 check to the couple on Sept. 23.
“(Urban and Ehlers) reported that Crawford had approached the camper and requested to take the child for the night,” according to the affidavit. “He said they agreed and gave the baby to Crawford. He said they then discussed it and went to the camper where the baby was and talked to Martin.”

“He said he had offered to turn the child over to Martin in exchange for $1,000 cash,” it says. “They said Martin had made an agreement, which they videotaped to make sure it was legal, and they planned to ‘legalize’ it on Monday. They both said they left with that understanding. That the child was given to Martin in exchange for $1,000, which was to be collected on Monday.”
Martin said he spoke to the mother about possible surrender reasons for her child. “Martin stated that he was unable to cope with the situation with three dogs and a child,” the affidavit reads.
