Read Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleiman’s memo on the future of AI companions

Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleiman has unveiled a redesigned version of co-pilotof the company AI assistantWith the overhauled Copilot, Microsoft and its AI chief Suleiman Let’s share our vision for an AI companion that promises to revolutionize the way we interact with technology in our daily lives.
Suleman, who joined Microsoft earlier this year after the tech giant made a strategic appointment Inflection AI The staff wrote a 700-word memo on what it called a “technological paradigm shift.” The redesigned Copilot, which resembles Inflection AI’s Pi product, aims to create a more personalized and helpful AI experience that adapts to users’ individual needs and preferences over time.

Here is Suleiman’s full memo:

“We are going through a technological paradigm shift. In just a few years, our computers have learned to speak our languages, see what we see, and hear what we hear.
Yet technology in itself has no importance. What is important is how it feels to people and what impact it has on society. It’s about how it changes lives, opens doors, expands minds and relieves pressure. It is perhaps the greatest promoter of human well-being in history, one of the most effective ways of generating solid and lasting benefits for billions of people.
And yet technology is and always should be at the service of humanity: an enabler, a way to deepen everything from our common bonds and shared understanding, our energy and imagination, our creativity and invention to relationship building.
In the field of AI, we often get bogged down in technical details. We spend our time talking about parameters and calculations. The focus is on training runs, data centers and the latest technologies. This is natural and inevitable when working at the boundaries of something new, where details really matter. But I think it’s important that in doing all this, getting caught up in the technical glitches, we don’t lose sight, not only of what we’re building, but also why we’re building it.
At Microsoft AI, we’re building an AI companion for everyone.
I truly believe that we can create a calmer, more supportive and helpful era of technology that is completely different from anything we have seen before. Great technology experiences are about how you feel, not about what’s hidden. It should be about what you experience, not about what we are building.
The co-pilot will be there for you, in your corner, next to you and always firmly aligned with your interests. It understands the context of your life, remembering the details that are most helpful in any situation, while protecting your privacy, data and security. It gives you access to a universe of knowledge, simplifies and declutters the daily pile of information, and provides support and encouragement when you want it.
Over time it will adapt to your ways and develop capabilities to suit your preferences and needs. We are not creating a static device, but rather establishing a dynamic, evolving and evolving conversation. It will provide you with unwavering support to help you manifest in your everyday life what you truly want, a new means of facilitating human connections and achievements alike.
With your permission, Copilot will eventually be able to act on your behalf, removing life’s complexities and giving you more time to focus on what matters to you. It will be an advocate for you in many of life’s most important moments. It will take you to that doctor’s appointment, take notes and follow up at the right time. This will share the burden of planning and preparing your child’s birthday party. And at the end of the day it will be there to help you think over a tricky decision in life.
Some people worry that AI will take away what makes us unique as humans. My life’s work has been to ensure that just the opposite happens. We choose what we create. This is something we must do together. Our work is to ensure that it always enriches people’s lives and strengthens our connections with others, while supporting our uniqueness and endlessly complex humanity.
This is a new age of technology that doesn’t just “solve problems”, it’s there to support you, teach you, and help you. In this sense, co-pilots are really different from that last wave of web and mobile. This is the beginning of a fundamental shift in what is possible for all of us. It is a long journey that will take years. With our latest update to Copilot, you’re just seeing the first careful steps in this direction.
Patience and care with our deployments are at the foundation of our approach. My commitment is to be accountable at every level, to work with you and listen to you. Respect and deep compassion for our users and society is the core purpose behind everything we do. This comes first. This is a journey we promise to take together. I couldn’t be more excited to start this with you.
Mustafa Suleman”
