And over the weekend, President Trump returned to Butler, Pennsylvania — where he survived an assassination attempt in July. The event – one of their most powerful to date – created a unique opportunity to assess the state of race and President Trump’s place in American history. Here are some observations:
First, the musk factor. For Trump, his presence and his immediate appeal to voters is monumental. He speaks for a new group of highly educated voters who were not traditionally Republicans, who believe that President Trump must win to preserve our constitutional freedoms. For several months now, a series of former Democrats – including Robert Kennedy, Jr.., former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard and RFK’s former running mate Nicole Shanahan — warning us that the people supporting Vice President Kamala Harris have created a political machine so powerful that it threatens our entire political system.
Consider what Harris’ supporters have done in recent years:
- They have opened America’s borders and done everything possible to make it as easy as possible for non-Americans to enter this country, receive government benefits, and ultimately vote in our elections.
- He has turned the Democratic Party into his personal fiefdom. Democrats no longer contest primaries or even serious debates about what positions they should take on issues, or who they should nominate for major offices. Harris’s supporters are so powerful that they ended President Biden’s career in a matter of weeks. They are so strong that they gave the Democratic nomination to Harris without any real debate, despite her poor political record. In the states they govern, such as California, state governments have become one-party oligopolies where elected officials are like governors. Gavin Newsom and JB Pritzker feel free to ignore the wishes of their people. Harris’s supporters now want to bring this system to the entire country.
- They have made clear that they intend to crack down on anyone who speaks out against them, banning them from the internet where possible and destroying companies like X that do not go along with their agenda.
- He has put many of his political opponents in jail and has made every possible effort to put President Trump himself in jail.

When the year began, many in Washington hoped that if they could defeat President Trump once more, the America First movement he led would break through. He was openly supporting people like former Rep. Liz Cheney to reclaim her seat in the GOP. But now — after crushing the vice presidential debate — the establishment is discovering that Vance, 40, is a compelling politician who will likely be a national figure for the next 30 years.
Yet Vance is no anomaly. Under President Trump, the GOP has developed a deep bench of talented leaders like senators. marco rubioJosh Hawley, Tom Cotton, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, governors. Ron DeSantis, and Glenn Youngkin – who are ready to put their stamp on this agenda. This crop of leaders will continue to grow the GOP into a multi-ethnic, multi-racial force for working-class people.

Third, there is Trump himself. The sheer size of the crowd at Butler speaks volumes. The atmosphere was electric. This time security was tight, sharpshooters were present on every rooftop.
President Trump’s success depends on his ability to convince millions of voters that he fights for their interests. Love, gratitude, defiance and patriotism were on full display at the Butler Fairgrounds. They are not a threat to democracy – they are simply smart enough to understand how the Washington DC cabal has broken America.

Finally, I saw President Trump. For anyone who has covered politics over the past 30 years, it’s clear that President Trump is really the only person we’ve covered who truly deserves a place in the history books. Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama were brilliant and smart politicians, but they were never willing to say or do anything that truly challenged the rich and powerful. The only other GOP administrations besides Trump since 1988 — the two Bush administrations — will not be remembered as transformative.

But President Trump has changed America. They have beaten the establishment so badly on economic issues that they have given up trying to talk about them. Her foreign policy is so much more successful than theirs that they don’t want Harris to talk about those issues.
He was vilified, impeached, accused by the most powerful people in the world – he faced unlimited opposition funding from some of the richest people in the world – and he just kept fighting.
He is in a stronger position today than he was at the same point in both 2016 and 2020. By promoting Vance and other young Republicans, they have created a movement that will survive no matter what happens in November. And he has shown incredible physical courage by stepping forward in a situation where we have disturbing evidence of sheer incompetence on the part of the Secret Service.
