A History of America’s Most Popular Beer Brands, Including Bud Light


Beer is the most popular alcoholic beverage in the United States, the country being the second largest beer market in the world.

It serves as home to some of the world’s best and most recognized breweries.

A study conducted by Statista found that the most recognized beer brands in the United States are Corona, Bud Light and Budweiser.

The study found that 87% of respondents recognized Bud Light and Corona, while 85% knew about Budweiser. Read below to learn the history of these popular brews.

1. Bud Light

Bud Light is produced by the German American brewing company Anheuser-Busch. The beer was initially released under the name Budweiser Light in 1982 as part of the company’s marketing campaign for a low-calorie beer, later renamed Bud Light for ease of marketing.

The drink is one of the most recognized brews in the United States and one of the best-selling brands under the Bush label.

During the 1990s, the drink became popular across the country through a creative marketing campaign filled with celebrity commercial appearances – this followed the company’s hugely popular “Spuds McKenzie” campaign in the late 1980s, which featured a bull The terrier was called “The”. However, Bud Light’s recent advertising efforts have garnered the beer brand its fair share of negative publicity – most notably its 2023 partnership with transgender social media personality Dylan Mulvaney.

A series of viral ads featuring the influencer triggered an immediate, widespread backlash, leading to a highly publicized boycott of Bud Light and the company reporting significant declines in the key metrics it had long dominated.

The boycott has proven remarkably persistent.

“Anheuser-Busch has spent all the money. They’ve done all the right things,” Beer Business Daily publisher Harry Schumacher told Fox News Digital in March. “They spent the money on the right things. And surprisingly, it didn’t really have that much of an impact on the trend. That’s incredible.”

Despite the blowback from the Mulvaney campaign – or, perhaps, because of it – Bud Light saw a 2% increase in name recognition over the previous year, still making it one of the best-known beer brands in the country.

2. Corona

Originating just south of the border in Mexico, Corona is the most famous foreign beer brand in the U.S. It’s also a label that’s been around for nearly a century.

The beer is produced by Grupo Modelo, Mexico’s largest brewer. In celebration of the brewery’s 10th anniversary, Grupo Modelo created Corona In 1925.

About a year after the beer was released to the public, the company decided to use clear, transparent bottles to distinguish Corona from other beers, and it has since served as an iconic symbol for the product. Used to be.

In 1937, the brewery released a better quality version of the beer called corona extra, and through an aggressive marketing campaign it quickly became Mexico’s best-selling beer. By the 1980s, Corona began to become popular in various urban centers in the United States. By the mid-1990s, Corona was the best-selling imported beer in the country.

3. Budweiser

Budweiser, known by its iconic nickname, “The King of Beers,” is another famous and easily recognizable Anheuser-Busch staple.

Pale Lager was created by Adolphus Busch in 1875 german american immigrants, and soon became one of the best-selling liquors in the country. Bush worked with his wife Lillie Anheuser to expand the marketing of the beer and improve its unique taste.

The pair began using pasteurization so that beer could travel long distances without damaging the product – one of the first breweries in the country to use this method at the time.

The modern Anheuser-Busch company was built on the couple’s efforts as they worked together to create America’s best-selling beer – and Budweiser has long served as its flagship brand.

Budweiser owes some of its influential brand identity to its history of successful, hugely popular television commercials that graced the airwaves in the 1980s and 1990s.

The Budweiser frogs, “What’s Up” people, and herd of Clydesdale horses in the company’s unnaturally majestic Super Bowl commercials are considered some of the most iconic campaigns in advertising history.
