More recently, the state has voted for the Democratic presidential candidate in only two of the last 18 elections (Clinton in 1996 and Biden in 2020).
Arizona has been particularly tumultuous for Trump in 2020, as he previously clashed with the late U.S. Senator and 2008 Republican presidential nominee John McCain.
Republicans still outnumber Democrats in Arizona, but about a third of voters are independent.
