Boston Globe editorial board calls on Biden to drop out of race after ‘historically bad’ debate

Another major newspaper in the city has called on President Biden to abandon his re-election bid following his highly criticized performance in last week’s debate against former President Trump.

The Boston Globe editorial board on Wednesday Published Column They argue that at this point, it is too great a risk for Biden to run for office, and that he should step down soon so that a more suitable Democratic candidate can be nominated.

“For the good of the country, his party and his legacy, Biden must do this. And soon,” it said.

The Globe’s editorial began by criticizing Biden’s team for failing to “adequately” explain “why his performance has been historically poor, other than that he has a cold.” It rejected his aides’ defense that retaining Biden was still the country’s lowest-risk move to defeat Trump and that it would be too risky for the party to try to pick a new nominee.

“Perhaps. But according to this and other editorial pages and a growing number of Democratic officials, there is more at risk in allowing Biden to continue as the party’s flag-bearer,” the board wrote. “Serious questions are now being raised about his ability to carry out the difficult job of being the leader of the free world. Can he negotiate with a hostile Republican Congress, dangerous foreign powers, or even fierce rivals within his own Cabinet? The nation’s confidence has been shaken.”

The Boston Globe editorial board’s column follows columns from editorial boards at other major news outlets that criticized Biden’s debate performance and argued it was time for him to drop out of the race.

The day after the debate, The New York Times Editorial Board called the president’s continued campaign a “reckless gamble”, and declared that “the greatest public service that Mr. Biden can perform now is to announce that he will not continue to run for re-election.”

Atlanta Journal-Constitution Editorial Board “The shadow of retirement is now necessary for President Biden,” he said over the weekend, advocating for an end to Biden’s campaign.

A Boston Globe editorial noted that polls were already bad for Biden before the “disastrous debate”, and now “his chances of winning over fickle independent voters, let alone keeping loyal ones, are rapidly fading.”

The board said that “a ray of hope” is that Biden “graciously steps down” and “frees up his delegates” so they can be given to new candidates — ” Vice President Kamala Harris To the governors of Michigan, Pennsylvania, and California, this list is only partial.”

After detailing the process for how the upcoming short-term delegate races might work, the board emphasized that Biden is the only thing standing in the way of the party’s success, and urged him to leave the party, suggesting that the Democratic Party could step in if necessary.

“He should withdraw from the race on his own, a decision he seems reluctant to do. His wife and children are also said to oppose the idea. But with the future of the nation at stake, this is not a decision a family should make alone. This is a moment when the Democratic Party, which has never been good at behaving like a party, must step into the fray,” the editorial said.

It also explained what course the party should take to persuade the President to step down.

“If he drops out of the race now, his party will hail him as a hero,” the board argued. “If he stays in the race and loses, it would be a disaster for the country. Democrats could lose both houses of Congress, leaving no check on Trump’s excesses and freeing him to appoint another right-wing judge to the most conservative Supreme Court in decades.”

The board also advised that if his team was still adamant about proving Biden’s eligibility to enter the race, “they should require Biden to do a number of interviews with reporters who have been critical of him.”

“They will let him attend as many campaign events as possible, without the aid of a teleprompter, without the tight controls. They will put him in public positions that show he can think on his feet.”

The editorial concluded by encouraging key Democratic officials to speak out against Biden’s re-election bid, stating, “The time for silence is past.”
