Karthik, who won the 2013 season with MI, said on Ravichandran Ashwin’s YouTube channel that he regretted that the Blue and Gold franchise did not want to retain him after a stellar 2013 season. Staying with MI will help him become an even better player. Another regret of his was not being able to represent his home state with Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
“If you really have to ask me about one of my regrets in my cricket career in relation to the IPL, it was the fact that I did not want to be retained in 2013. If I had to rehash that whole thing again and again And that’s when I think sometimes, as a young player, you need someone as a life coach, if I had Abhishek Nair at that time, I know he would have said Mumbai. Play for Indians,” Karthik said.
“I don’t have too many regrets in life. I’m not that kind of person, but if I have two regrets in my cricket career in terms of the IPL, one would be the fact that I decided not to retain because I thought MI was a team that could really help me grow and become a better player.”
“And two facts would be that, obviously, I could not represent CSK till now. But I understand, although it is regrettable because I could not play. I mean, coming from Chennai, I have played all my cricket. Played there, and I would love to be a part of the yellow jersey, but I always respect them because they really try to get me in the auction every year,” he concluded.
The wicketkeeper-batsman said that he had the option to remain with Mumbai Indians but he decided not to stay despite the existing infrastructure, star power and leadership of captain-coaches Rohit Sharma and Ricky Ponting. He also said that he has good relations with the Ambani family, who own the franchise.
“I had the opportunity to be retained, and I turned it down because I felt that if I went into the auction, I would be, you know, a typical young guy who obviously wanted to spend his time at the auction, and I went in. And I became a part of the auction. I just felt that if I had been a part of Mumbai Indians at that stage, I would have developed more as a player, given the kind of infrastructure they had, the kind of team. He had created it, and being a part of it, the team was being led by Rohit Sharma (Ricky) Ponting and the owner was also fantastic with me.
“I had really good relationships with Akash (Ambani), Anant (Ambani) and to some extent Nita (Ambani) sister-in-law. So I had good relationships, and you know, I just felt like if I had that Being part of the team, it would have helped me grow as a cricketer and a person, and so, when I look back, a decade has passed since I felt I missed an opportunity in Mumbai Is,” he said.
In the 2013 season, Karthik scored 510 runs in 19 matches at an average of 28.33 and a strike rate of over 124, including two fifties. His best score was 86.
Karthik, who captained KKR from 2018-20, admitted that he had some “difficult conversations” with spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who had to be benched after taking just four wickets in nine matches in the 2019 season.
The wicketkeeper-batsman revealed that the spinner is not performing as well as he is right now and he has to be “honest” with Kuldeep. He expressed his delight at the spinner’s progress since then, saying he has become a better bowler and a “world-beater”. He hoped that Kuldeep, who is now a part of Delhi Capitals from 2022, is able to understand what Dinesh wanted to tell him and that there was nothing personal between them.
He said, “Leading a franchise is a completely different job. There are many other cultures, and you will find it challenging to deal with other individuals. You can be very honest with them. As a leader, you Will lose friendship.” Said.
“During my tenure as KKR captain, Kuldeep (Yadav) was not performing as well as he is doing now. There were tough conversations with him, and I don’t think he would have appreciated me at that level. . I have to be strict with them.”
“It was a tough time for Kuldeep. I think that tough time has made him a better bowler today. My misfortune is that I had to be a part of that bad phase in his life. I hope he understands That’s what I did. I don’t want him to appreciate it and be okay with it. You have to take decisions for the team and there is nothing personal in it,” Karthik concluded.
