America’s performance in the T20 World Cup has been remarkable…
We are very excited. We have a great opportunity to represent the US on such a big stage. There is nothing greater for players than representing their country in the World Cup, and that is exactly what we are doing. We have a chance to play against big teams – Pakistan and now India. We have also played against Ireland and Canada many times. But this is a completely different experience. It is special for us.
How is the popularity of cricket in America, a country famous for its passion for NBA, baseball and NFL?
People have come in large numbers to watch our matches. There is a lot of buzz. It is an opportunity to bring the whole community together. As players, we just want to play cricket and enjoy every moment. That’s all. This is the first time we have got a chance to play in such a big event, and we are giving our best. All I want to say is that all of us (US team) are enjoying our cricket. US cricket is doing really well.
After defeating Pakistan, America’s next match is against India. Are you eyeing the wicket of any particular Indian player?
I don’t target players in particular. As a player, I love contributing to my team’s victory. It is a very short format game. Whether it is taking a tough stand, bowling good overs, taking important wickets, putting a brake on the run, scoring runs, getting run outs or containing the batsman, I love it all. Obviously, I would love to get Virat Kohli out or take Rohit’s wicket. But it all depends on when I am bowling – in the powerplay or after that. I play well in all conditions. I met and interacted with Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja during the 2006 Under-19 World Cup and am looking forward to meeting them again.
Would you like to highlight two important players of the Indian team?
Rohit Sharma. He can perform well anywhere. And in bowling, no one else but Bumrah. Give him any situation or condition, he will take wickets and win you matches. He is that kind of a player.
Your connection to India?
My cricket journey began in India. I was born in Ahmedabad, Gujarat and studied in a boarding school in Vapi. I played most of my cricket in Ahmedabad before moving to the US in 2003. I started playing cricket in the US and got my first big opportunity to represent the USA in the Under-19 World Cup in Sri Lanka in 2006. I got to play against teams like Australia and South Africa, facing the likes of David Warner, Aaron Finch, Matthew Wade and many others. During the World Cup, I had the privilege of meeting and interacting with Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja. The experience of international cricket at such a young age was invaluable. Subsequently, I was selected for the USA senior team and since then I have played around 70-80 matches for them. I want to continue representing the USA team for as long as possible.
Who is your inspiration and why?
I started playing at a time when Sachin TendulkarSourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid. Initially, I was a fan of Dada (Ganguly). He was my inspiration and a true leader. As time went by, I saw the era of players like MS Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh and Virat Kohli. I admire MS Dhoni a lot. I admire his behaviour on and off the field, the way he handles the players and his ability to turn the match around with his batting skills. He is simply amazing and incredibly down-to-earth. He has contributed a lot to cricket.
In cricket, being an all-rounder, I idolise Ravindra Jadeja. I play a similar role to him, being a left-arm spinner and a middle-order batsman. I watch and follow his game closely. I am looking forward to meeting him.
Can you share some details about your meeting with the great batsman Sachin Tendulkar and the legendary Shane Warne?
When the Legends Masters League took place in the USA, the great Shane Warne and the great Sachin Tendulkar were part of that league. We got the opportunity to meet them and learn valuable lessons of cricket. I worked as a net bowler in that league and bowled to Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Matthew Hayden and many other legends. I learned a lot from their experiences.
What are your thoughts on drop-in pitches?
I have never played on drop-in pitches before. This is our first time. All I have heard is that these are real wickets. They benefit everyone – spinners, fast bowlers, batsmen. All we have heard is that these are real wickets and really exciting.
Was the USA confident of pulling off upsets against major teams similar to their performance against Pakistan?
We were confident, especially with our team. We are a balanced team with experienced players who can perform well in any situation and circumstance. They can handle pressure and win us matches. It is not easy to perform on the big stage, especially in front of a packed stadium, but our team knows how to deal with it. They know how to perform in any situation.
