Be it the ICC World Test Championship Final, the ODI World Cup Final or the T20s, Travis, you are the go-to man for every format of the game…
It’s something I’ve been working on for a while. I think it’s something that comes naturally. It’s nice to be able to switch between formats, although it’s hard to do. The challenge will come again in the summer, especially after so many games IPL For cricket, to make sure I have worked to be ready for the Test matches. So, my mind is already working on a few things that I want to get done before that time. I think it happens naturally. Ronnie (Andrew McDonald) and Pat (Cummins) have instilled this confidence in me to go out there and play the way I want to. And that’s all I try to do.
How was your IPL experience with Sunrisers Hyderabad?
It’s been fun. It’s been seven years since I came back. It was great to have Pat and Dan (Daniel Vettori) with me – familiar faces. I loved the time I spent with Abhishek; he’s an exceptional talent. We’re in a good mindset, and the boys know what they have to do.
Australia lost the first two matches of the ODI World Cup but made a brilliant comeback to win the title.
It was an amazing campaign. I missed the start of it and came in the middle. We had to put everything together and fix all the issues, but it was incredible. Winning the World Cup was a career-defining moment for me. Honestly, we have had a few such moments including the Test Championship, so yes, there were some really good moments.

Will Rohit Sharma be under any kind of pressure in the T20 World Cup, especially after losing the ODI World Cup at home?
I don’t think Rohit has to worry too much. He has been a great captain for quite some time now and is a great player as well. So, I don’t think there is any problem in that regard. India is in good hands. I think you can probably name four or five teams who are going to be in the race. It is very important for them to play aggressive cricket. With Rohit and Virat, and their great bowling attack led by star bowler Bumrah, who has also done well in the IPL, their chances of winning are quite high. Their chances are probably similar to the three or four other teams that are in contention.
How about another India vs Australia final?
(Laughter) It would be nice. It would be nice to be in the final. I think everybody in India would love it, especially given what happened in the last two finals. So, I’m sure India would want revenge at some point. There would be good drama around it if that happened. Let’s hope we get involved in that, and let’s hope you get involved in that, and we’ll see what happens.
How would you describe Australian aggressive cricket?
I think it comes down to the continuity of the team. The team has been together for four or five years now, and everyone has had moments where they have been able to perform and play well. So confidence within the team is about giving each player the support to do the job. In big moments in certain games, someone has always been able to stand up, and it’s not always the same person. It’s someone different every time. I think that’s what makes a good and creative team. It’s not always going to be perfect, and we’re not always going to win every single game, but in tough situations and tough moments, you know that hopefully you’re that person, but if not, the person standing next to you can stand up in that moment.
How would you describe Pat Cummins as a captain and a player?
Pat (Cummins) really enjoys his time away from the game. Not just with his family, but he also spends time with his friends, talking about big goals, eating and drinking. I think that adds a human aspect to it. The dressing room atmosphere is relaxed and enjoyable. I like that he and Andrew McDonald (head coach) have established a great dynamic in terms of consistency in messages, which has been constant over the last few years.
He has probably evolved over the last couple of years and is a lot more calm now. He maintains a cool environment, but his approach is also tough. He gets more involved with each player individually and discusses game plans and so on. It is really hard to identify his style. He is very calm and composed, but in the background, he is very particular. He checks a lot of stats and has meetings. He is very calm and to the point, so there are not too many long meetings or big team talks.
Can you describe the sports documentary series “The Test” available on Amazon?
Yes, it is exciting. I think it gives a good perspective of how we are on and off the field. The first two series have been very well received, everyone at home and around the world is enjoying it. And I think this one will be the same.
