Fishermen in Mississippi make dramatic rescue of 38 dogs floating in the water


What started as a day spent on the water with a friend turned into a rescue operation involving 38 dogs.

Bob Gist, 61, a State Farm agent from Arkansas, decided to go on a fishing trip with his friend Brad Carlisle, a State Farm agent from Tennessee, after not seeing each other for some time.

The two men headed to Grenada Lake in Mississippi and contacted local fishing guide Jordan Crestman, who led them to the water.

After not having any success in their early morning fishing attempts, the group moved to another location.

“We moved to another location about half a mile from where we were and we start fishing, And pretty soon we might hear some dogs barking,” Gist said.

“Pretty soon we saw some dogs on the horizon in the water.”

After the encounter, Gist said, he learned the dogs were part of an annual fox run in the area.

Chrestman spotted a deer in the water and the group of dogs were attempting to catch it. Chase the animal.

“We were fishing for about 10 or 15 minutes, and Jordan (Chrestman) said, ‘Guys, if you don’t mind, we should go check on those dogs because they’re pretty far out in the water,’” Gist said.

As soon as the boat arrived at the scene, all three persons were stunned.

“We’re shocked because there are dogs everywhere and they’re all going in different directions because they can’t see either side anymore,” Gist said.

“And they’re all hunting dogs – We can see this clearly because they have expensive GPS radio collars on them.”

Without hesitation, people took the dogs onto the boat so that they would not drown.

“We immediately started calling the dogs onto the boat, grabbing their collars and putting them in the boat,” Gist said.

The three fishermen caught as many dogs as they could and took them with them. on the boat Before the room runs out.

Crestman managed to gather 25 to 27 dogs, and made sure that none of the puppies attempted to jump back into the water.

Once the men return Dog Gist said when they arrived at the bank, they found the owners in a panic and calling for help.

After rescuing the second group of dogs, a man on the ground told Gist and the others that he had the dogs’ GPS tracker and asked if he could join in the rescue.

According to Gist, the tracker led the other individuals to an additional group of three to four dogs, estimated to be more than a mile from shore.

“They were on the verge of drowning because they had been floating in the water for an hour,” Gist said.

“We came back to the ramp with that last pack of dogs … (and) we had to pull them out of the boat because they didn’t want to get out of our boat. They were afraid they would go back in the water. It was terrifying.”

The dogs’ owner tried to give Crestman money, but he refused to take it, Gist said.

Gist has labeled Chrestman a true hero Dogs to the rescue.

“If Brad and I had been in the boat alone, we wouldn’t have known anything was wrong, but that 20-year-old guy — I’m 61, so I’m calling him a kid — he knew something had to be done,” Gist said.

“That kid had the presence of mind to know that ‘if we don’t do something, there are 38 dogs here that are going to die.’ And he saved them, I mean we all pulled them in, but that kid is the hero here.”
