Georgia high school shooting: Officials identify 2 teachers and 2 students killed


Authorities have identified four victims killed in the shooting. Georgia High School A student opened fire inside the school on Wednesday morning.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) Director Chris Hosey said two 14-year-old students and two teachers were killed during the shooting.

Hosi identifies two students killed Apalachee High School Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, both 14. Math teachers Richard Aspinwall and Christina Irimi also died during the shooting, Hosey said.

Friends of Schermerhorn’s mother told the New York Times that he was known for having a “positive attitude toward everything.” People said he was cheerful and loved to read and play video games.

Richard Aspinwall

One of the victims, Aspinwall, was also a football coach at the school.

One student paid tribute on Instagram, writing, “Coach Aspinwell was one of the kindest teachers I have ever met. He always made it known that if I needed help with anything he would always be there.”

“He was very funny, spoke proudly about his wife and children, and showed all of his students that he cared about them,” the post added.

On Wednesday, authorities identified Colt Gray, now 14. murder shooter Two students and two teachers were killed at Apalachee High School. Gray surrendered to authorities and was taken into custody following the violence.

Christian Angulo, 14, was also killed. Fox 5 Atlanta reported that his classmates described him as fun and jovial to be with. A student who said he was a longtime friend of Angulo’s said he was in “denial”

Lisette Angulo described herself as Christian’s older sister on a GoFundMe page that has raised more than $50,000 for his funeral.

“He was such a good kid and very loving and very caring. He was loved by so many people. His passing was sudden and unexpected. We are truly saddened. He truly didn’t deserve this,” they wrote on the site.

Christina Irimi

Math teacher Christina Irimi was also named among the dead. According to Fox 5 Atlanta, her students described her as patient and caring.

Hosie said an AR platform-style weapon was used in the shooting.

The FBI said, “According to the joint statement just issued, the 13-year-old juvenile referred to is the same person in custody in connection with the shooting that occurred today at Apalachee High School.”

Investigators are still trying to determine if anyone was specifically targeted, but they are not aware of any known connection between Gray and the victims.

“Within minutes, law enforcement officers and two school resource officers assigned to the school arrived on scene,” Barrow County Sheriff Judd Smith told reporters during a press conference Wednesday afternoon.

According to Smith, Gray will be charged with murder and tried as an adult.

Officials said there was no evidence that any additional shooters were involved in the shooting and investigators were actively pursuing leads from possible accomplices of the shooter.

In a joint statement, the FBI’s Atlanta field office and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said the agency’s National Threat Operations Center received an anonymous tip about threats posted online regarding a possible school shooting in May 2023.

The agencies said that the threats It had pictures of guns.

Within 24 hours of receiving the anonymous tip, investigators determined the threats came from Georgia and referred the case to the sheriff’s office.

“The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office located a potential suspect, a 13-year-old boy, and questioned him and his father,” the FBI said. “The father reported there were hunting guns in his home, but the man did not have unsupervised access to them.”

The boy has denied making the threat, and authorities have alerted local schools to keep an eye on the child, agencies said.

“At that time, there was no probable cause to arrest or take any additional law enforcement action at the local, state or federal level,” the FBI said.

Gray has been booked and is currently being held at the Barrow County Detention Center.
