Global dignitaries gather in New Delhi for ‘Bodhi Yatra’ conference

The conference was attended by Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Minister of State for Tourism, Government of India and key officials including the Tourism Minister. CultureUttar Pradesh, Jaiveer Singh, Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, V. Vidyawati, Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh, Durga Shankar Mishra, Principal Secretary, Tourism and Culture, Mukesh Kumar Meshram, Special Secretary, Tourism, Isha Priya, Director General, IBC, Abhijit Haldar and former Vice Chairman, CTA, Acharya Yeshi Phuntsok.
Ambassador of Singapore His Excellency Simon Wong, Ambassador of Thailand His Excellency Pattarat Hongtong, Ambassador of Myanmar His Excellency Moe Kyaw Aung as well as Ambassadors of many other countries like Bhutan, Japan, Indonesia, Argentina, Mongolia, Sri Lanka, Vietnam etc. reflected India’s strong international relations by their presence at the conference.
Members of the International Buddhist Council, academicians, representatives of national and international organisations, bureaucrats, travel writers and bloggers were also present at the event.
The programme began with a short presentation by the Special Secretary, Tourism Department, Uttar Pradesh, showcasing the rich history, culture and heritage of the six major Buddhist sites in the state: Sankisa, Sarnath, Shravasti, Kapilavastu, Kaushambi and Kushinagar. “With its rich religious diversity, Uttar Pradesh continues to inspire and enthuse those who seek a deeper understanding of life and knowledge,” she said. The presentation also outlined investment opportunities and investor-friendly tourism policies of Uttar Pradesh, aimed at promoting foreign direct investment (FDI) in the tourism sector.
After this, the Principal Secretary of the Tourism and Culture Department gave the welcome address. He said, “Uttar Pradesh has emerged as a popular tourist destination, achieving the number one position in domestic tourism and we hope that a large number of foreign tourists will also come here in the near future.”
Throwing light on the objective of the event he said, “We wanted to convey that Spiritual Cultural relations with various countries of South Asia and South East Asia and improving cultural diplomacy in collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs and promoting foreign direct investment in the state. We have already allotted 02 acres of land in Varanasi to the Government of Bhutan for construction of temples and guest houses. Through this platform we also offer other countries to invest in the hospitality and tourism sector of all these six destinations and we assure you that we will provide all the necessary mutual support.”
A round table discussion and brainstorming session was organised to explore various initiatives and strategies to promote these programmes. Historical And special attention will be given to spiritual destinations, especially to attract foreign tourists.
In his address, the Union Minister of Tourism and Culture thanked the Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department for organizing the Bodhi Yatra. He said, “India is not a land of war, but the land of Buddha. This holy land has given the message of truth, non-violence, kindness and compassion to the whole world. Uttar Pradesh is a major part of this heritage. The Prime Minister had envisioned creating various tourist circuits in the country. The first circuit in that is the Buddha Circuit. I would like to congratulate Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Tourism Minister Jaiveer Singh that the Uttar Pradesh government did important work to make the Prime Minister’s dream come true.”
Speaking at the event, Secretary, Ministry of Tourism said, “Buddha resides in the heart and soul of Uttar Pradesh. The Government of India in collaboration with the Government of Uttar Pradesh aims to make the pilgrimage not only a memorable experience for the Buddhist devotees but also a wonderful experience for the people. The Pilgrims We will not only ensure development but also better employment opportunities for the local communities. We are also keen to enhance the infrastructure and facilities of Buddhist museums in the state as they are a living source of history.”
The Tourism and Culture Minister of Uttar Pradesh said, ‘Uttar Pradesh is the fourth largest state in terms of area. It is the largest state with a population of 25 crores and is equal to the fifth country in the world in terms of population. Fortunately, all the places from the birth of Lord Buddha to his education, attainment of knowledge, preaching and religious awakening campaign and Mahaparinirvana (death) are located here. Under the guidance of our Chief Minister, we are developing this region. Buddhist Circuit To promote the strong historical, cultural and spiritual ties of Buddhism with Uttar Pradesh on the world map and attract large number of Buddhist pilgrims from India and abroad.”
Chief Secretary, Government of Uttar Pradesh said, “Uttar Pradesh is the birthplace of Buddhism and this Bodhi Yatra is an initiative to make you experience the peace and divinity of Lord Buddha. Important events of Buddhism took place in Uttar Pradesh and the aim of this event is to promote these Buddhist sites on the global map. Working under the vision of our Prime Minister and with the continuous efforts of the State Government and the Department of Tourism, we have developed infrastructure and world-class tourist facilities at these sites which are emerging as top tourist destinations in the country. Through our investor-friendly tourism policy, stakeholders can become an important part of this transformational journey of Uttar Pradesh in the tourism sector.”
The attendees were treated to a cultural programme depicting the life of Lord Buddha, from his birth to his enlightenment and death. The event celebrated the founding of Buddhism and the rich historical, cultural and spiritual heritage of Uttar Pradesh. The event also highlighted how the Buddhist Circuit is one of the favourite tourist destinations for both national and international tourists. The event celebrated the important role of the Buddhist Circuit in promoting the state’s tourism sector.
