India’s probable T20 World Cup squad after 4 weeks of IPL 2024: Big competition for back-up opener, third spinner

The Indian cricket team’s 15-man squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 is likely to be finalized by the end of April to stick to the ICC’s May 1 cut-off date for the provisional roster. According to reports, captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, Rishabh Pant, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj and Arshdeep Singh are confirmed in India’s T20 World Cup team.

The remaining five slots will be finalized based on the player’s IPL 2024 performance in the first four weeks of the ongoing T20 tournament. A BCCI source told news agency PTI that there is no possibility of including any new player in the national selection committee for the T20 World Cup.

“There will be no experiments or left-field selection. Those who have played for India and have performed consistently in T20 Internationals and IPL will be rewarded,” a BCCI official was quoted as saying by the news agency.

It is also reported that captain Rohit Sharma and former captain Virat Kohli can open for India in the upcoming T20 World Cup starting from June 2 in West Indies and United States.

IPL 2024 is already seeing some impressive individual performances from Indian players, with fans and experts still debating on the back-up opener, second-choice wicketkeeper, a finisher slot in the middle order and a back-up spinner .

As the major ICC tournament is fast approaching, we pick the remaining five slots from the 10 contenders to select the final 15.

Shubman Gill vs Yashasvi Jaiswal
Both the young cricketers are expected to compete for the back-up opener’s spot. While Rohit and Virat are automatic selections, Shubman Gill is likely to be given preference over Yashasvi Jaiswal based on his current form. GT captain Gill has been in good form in IPL 2024, having scored 263 runs in seven matches, which included two fifties. On the other hand, RR opener Jaiswal has struggled in the ongoing T20 tournament, scoring just 121 runs in seven matches.

second choice wicketkeeper
After his spectacular comeback in the IPL following a fatal car accident, DC captain Rishabh Pant has almost confirmed his place as the first-choice wicketkeeper in the upcoming T20 World Cup. Meanwhile, India are expected to select one more wicketkeeper in the 15-man squad. Sanju Samson and KL Rahul are contenders to become the second choice wicketkeeper. However, Sanju is in better form than Rahul so far in IPL 2024. While Sanju has scored 276 runs in seven matches, Rahul has 204 runs in his name. Based on current form, Sanju can be selected in the final 15.

Rinku Singh vs Shivam Dubey
If the national selection committee opts to select Virat and Rohit as openers, and Jaiswal and Gill are also included, then one of Rinku Singh and Shivam Dubey could be out of India’s 15-man squad. As a finisher he is capable of adding the required firepower lower down the order. Rinku and Shivam have been in great form for the Indian cricket team and their respective franchises in the IPL. While CSK’s Shivam has grabbed the headlines in IPL 2024 by scoring 242 runs at a strike rate of over 160, KKR’s star finisher Rinku has scored 83 runs at a strike rate of 162.74 and has looked in great form with the bat in his limited opportunities. . ,

Yuzvendra Chahal vs Axar Patel vs Ravi Bishnoi
Out of these three, one will be selected as the third choice spinner, which is sure to be Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav. Either Yuzvendra Chahal or Ravi Bishnoi can add variety as the sole leg spinner in the team. However, based on current form, Chahal is likely to be the preferred choice over Bishnoi. The Rajasthan Royals leg spinner has made his mark and is the second-highest wicket-taker in IPL 2024 with 12 wickets in seven matches. LSG’s Ravi Bishnoi has taken only four wickets so far in the ongoing T20 tournament. With Jadeja in the team, Akshar’s inclusion seems disappointing.

Arshdeep Singh – Avesh Khan
With Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj almost certain, India will be looking to pick another fast bowler in their final 15. There is expected to be competition between Arshdeep Singh and Avesh Khan for this spot. Arshdeep Singh is expected to be the preferred option as the left-arm pacer brings more variety to the bowling department of the Men in Blue. Representing Punjab Kings, Arshdeep has already scalped nine wickets in seven IPL 2024 matches. For LSG, Avesh Khan has been the wicket-taker with seven wickets in as many matches. However, Avesh will need to put in more effort and be more economical to overtake Arshdeep in India’s final 15-man squad.

India’s probable team for T20 World Cup 2024: Rohit Sharma (captain), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rinku Singh, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dubey, Rishabh Pant (wicketkeeper), Sanju Samson (wicketkeeper), Ravindra Jadeja, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj. , Arshdeep Singh
