A defiant Kristi Noem hits back at critics after outrage over her upcoming memoir Turns out he once killed a dog,
“I can understand why some people are upset with my upcoming book – No Going Back – the 20-year-old story of Cricket, one of the working dogs on our farm. This book is filled with many honest stories from my life There are good and bad days, challenges, painful decisions and lessons learned,” South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem began in a social media post published on X on Sunday.
Noem continued, “The fact is that South Dakota law says that dogs that attack and kill livestock can be punished. Noting that crickets have shown aggressive behavior toward people by biting , I decided what I should do.”
The outrage spread across social media platforms last weekend after the Guardian reported on an excerpt from Noem’s upcoming memoir, “No Going Back,” which is scheduled to be released on May 7. The excerpt details Noem’s carrying of his 14-month-old female. The dog Cricket went to a “gravel pit” near his farm and shot him because he was “less than worthless”, “untrained” and had killed and eaten several chickens.

She reported that Cricket had ruined a pheasant hunt when she was “out of her mind with excitement, chasing all those birds and having the time of her life.”
He added, “It was not a pleasant job, but it had to be done. And after it was over I realized there was another unpleasant job that needed to be done.” According to the report, Noem also described killing an “evil and mean” goat in the same gravel pit in the book.

The report drew reaction online from both Democrats and conservatives, who appeared shocked and outraged at the dog’s killing.

Noem has been named as a possible running mate in former President Trump’s effort to take control of the White House in November. However, critics speculated that the controversy over killing his dog might have ended his career in politics.
