Speaking at an event organized by Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) organised an event to mark the 78th Independence Day celebrations of India. CJI Chandrachud He emphasized that such infrastructure not only facilitates the lawyers in commuting to the court but also increases their sense of responsibility towards the judiciary.

“When I emphasise the need for such changes, I put two components at the forefront – the citizens and the Bar. A modern judiciary requires an accessible and inclusive infrastructure. Making it easier for lawyers to work in the Court not only allows them to assist the Court with ease and efficiency, but also makes them feel a sense of responsibility towards the institution of the judiciary”, the CJI said.
Speaking about the infrastructural initiatives taken in the Supreme Court in the last six months, Chandrachud said, “In the last six months, we have taken several infrastructural initiatives. The Supreme Court has extended fibre optics internet to the lawyers’ block, created consultation rooms in the east wing of the main building, constructed cubicles for lawyers waiting for chamber allotment, set up a multi-facility centre and renovated the office of the SCBA.”
“We have also created a new lounge for women members of the Bar. Establishment of a women-only space inside the Court premises will enhance the ability of women lawyers to assist the Court and seek guidance from their seniors,” the Chief Justice said.
The Chief Justice said that a new Accessibility Help Desk has been set up in the Supreme Court to make the Court a truly ‘Court for All’.
“A new Accessibility Help Desk has also been set up to make our Court truly a ‘Court for All’. The Help Desk will facilitate access of persons with disabilities, women and senior citizens to the Supreme Court”, the CJI said.
The Chief Justice also spoke about the upcoming initiatives to be taken by the apex court, including the construction of a large creche for child care in Block E of the Additional Building. He said the facility will relieve the problems that many parents, especially women, face while becoming parents in their professional lives.
“Construction of a welfare centre for advocates in the court, upgradation of existing facilities and provision of air-conditioning in the corridors of Court Rooms 1 to 5 as well as Block D of the Administrative Building Complex will also be done,” the Chief Justice informed.
The CJI acknowledged the involvement of all stakeholders and said that no work is complete without their participation. He also said that the Supreme Court Registry works tirelessly to bring the cases of litigants before the Court.
He also highlighted the second edition of the Hackathon, which sought suggestions to improve the functioning of the Registry.
“We have recently announced the second edition of the Hackathon, inviting suggestions to improve the functioning of the Registry. After a successful Hackathon last year, in which we received valuable suggestions from members of the Bar, we are now looking for suggestions to explore solutions in Artificial Intelligence-based technology to improve and streamline the functioning of the Registry. I encourage all of you to participate and help us make things better for you and the litigants,” the CJI said.
Praising the role of the Bar in shaping important constitutional and legal developments in India, the CJI said, “The Bar has been responsible for the direction of many important constitutional and legal developments in our country, which have carried forward the aspirations of our freedom fighters. The legal community has been instrumental in setting the Constitution on a strong infrastructure, initiating concrete processes, protecting the dignity of women, gender minorities, LGBTQ+ people and other marginalised communities. This celebratory journey of democracy and freedom required your active and moral participation,” the CJI said.
The Chief Justice said that on Independence Day, we honour our commitment to realise the dreams of those who sacrificed their lives for the country and who worked to make it better.
“But every beating heart in India, irrespective of their age or stature, goes back in time and is filled with a deep emotional sense of patriotism and indebtedness to our freedom fighters when we see our majestic flag flying high against the wind of freedom on Independence Day. On this day we honour our commitment to realise the dreams of all those who sacrificed their lives for this country and who lived to make it great,” the CJI said.
