ETimes had the pleasure of chatting with Blumel, the charming star of this exciting new series where history takes a bizarre turn, ensuring plenty of action, angst, romance, comedy and drama along the way. Excerpts:
Edward, I loved your show! It was such a refreshing romantic comedy that I couldn’t resist watching it in one go.
Yes! I hope people read it all in one sitting. I think that’s part of the fun of it. I read it in two sittings and I think people can do better.
‘My Lady Jane’ is based on a bestselling book, and fans of these adaptations can be quite critical. Have you read the book?
I haven’t actually read the book yet. Although it’s a big inspiration for the show, I decided to leave it until I finished my role. I didn’t want anything in the book to influence me in a way that was different from my interpretation.

What was your experience like playing Lord Guilford?
I think it’s always fun to play characters that are in the book, but it’s also important to put your own stamp on it. I trust myself to give it my own flavor and hope that people who have read the book will enjoy it. I also know that when I play these characters, we attract new fans who may not have read the book. So for me, it’s about giving it my own interpretation. I’ve gotten into playing book characters before, but I think it’s very important to treat it like any other role, find the truth in the character from your own perspective and hope that people like it.

Since this is a twist to a historical epic, did you feel restricted in any way, or were you given the creative freedom to add your own quirks to your character?
There are definitely no restrictions. I think I was chosen because my interpretation of the character in the audition was exactly what they were looking for. The set was incredibly creative, and we all felt free to have fun with our characters.
Everard, you and Emily Bader might just become television’s new favorite couple. Do you have a name for fans?
Oh, I’m glad to hear that! Thank you. Well, I think it’s really important for the fans to decide the ship name. They’re so creative, and it feels more real when it comes from them.

You share most of your scenes with Emily and they are the sweetest, funniest and sexiest scenes. How did you two form this partnership?
It’s so much fun to work with someone you really get along with. When I first met Emily, we did a chemistry read during the audition, and I felt we were destined to be friends. There’s nothing better than being on set with someone who feels like a friend. It makes all kinds of scenes easier and more natural – whether intimate, argumentative or anything else – because you feel safe with the person you’re with. And with Emily, I definitely felt safe.
When it comes to romance in India, Shahrukh Khan One name comes to mind first. Have you seen any Indian movies and who is the best romantic hero in your opinion?
Oh my god, the Indian movie I watched is called RRR. I watched it recently because a friend of mine was actually in it, and she had an amazing experience being a part of it.
When it comes to romantic figures, I think the biggest influences on me as an actor were Mary and Lady Jane’A Knight’s Tale, Heath Ledger In that film he embodies the ideal fantasy, historical, comedy and romantic hero. There’s something so brilliant about the way he plays the funny side of things in this film, yet he plays it so seriously. The comedy comes from the fact that he approaches it like Hamlet, and I think that’s brilliant.
Historical dramas have costumes, glitter, horse riding and sword fighting that make it a spectacular spectacle. But, what is an average day like on the set compared to what we see on screen?
The costumes play a big role because you have to get used to the fact that everything takes a while – getting dressed, getting undressed, even going to the bathroom. Everything slows down because you’re constantly doing and undoing thousands of laces and buttons. However, I feel very lucky because as a male character in the Tudor period, I had it easier than the women who were stuck in corsets. There are little things you have to get used to, but putting on those costumes and immersing yourself in that world is amazing because it makes acting a lot easier. You really feel restricted in ways they would have been restricted.
Finally, what does the future hold for Jane and Gilford? Will they live happily ever after, or can we expect the story to continue in a second season?
I think that just like the Tudor era—whether in real life or in our version—nothing stays peaceful for very long. So, I expect there will be a lot of excitement ahead for them, but I’m sure there will be some obstacles along the way.
Rather than focusing on the young Tudor queen’s brief reign and her subsequent beheading in 1553, ‘My Lady Jane’, inspired by the best-selling book series, reimagines history where the damsel in distress saves herself. In this revolutionary retelling of English royal history, viewers can expect an epic tale of true love and high adventure, blending action, history, fantasy, comedy and steamy romance. The eight-episode series also stars Jordan Peters, dominic cooperAnna Chancellor, Rob Brydon and Jim Broadbent.
