Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas was born in Pin Point, Georgia. this day in history23 June, 1948.
His entire family suffered from extreme poverty. His parents divorced when he was young; Thomas’s father abandoned the family when young Clarence was only two years old.
Eventually, Clarence Thomas was sent to live with them. his maternal grandfather Multiple sources said the incident occurred after a house caught fire.
Thomas’s grandfather had a profound influence on his life: Thomas even titled his 2008 memoir “My Grandfather’s Son”.
“I even called him Daddy,” Thomas wrote. in his book“Because that’s what my mother called him… He was dark, strong, proud and determined to mold me in his image… He was the only hero of my life.”
“The greatest event in my early life was living with my grandparents in 1955,” Thomas said in a September 2021 speech at the University of Notre Dame.

As a young child, Thomas was educated in segregated schools. Catholic school For black children.
According to the website Oyez, he became the first black student admitted to St. John Vianney, a Catholic minor seminary.
“My nuns and my grandparents performed their sacred duty during a time of extreme racial hatred, and they did so with pride, dignity and honor,” Thomas said at Notre Dame.
“Even today I respect, admire and love our nuns. They were pious, courageous and principled women,” he said.

Oyez said that despite his academic success at St. John Vianney, Thomas faced racial harassment.
After graduating from St. John Vianney, Thomas intended to become a Catholic priest. He attended Immaculate Conception Seminary from 1967 to 1968.
He left the seminary after again facing racism from classmates – and College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Oyez said he graduated in 1971.
He graduated from Yale Law School in 1974 and was admitted to practice law in Missouri that same year, according to the Supreme Court website.

Thomas served in a variety of roles in the 1970s and 1980s, including as assistant secretary for civil rights at the U.S. Department of Education and as chair of the U.S. Equal Opportunity Commission from 1982 to 1990.
From 1990 to 1991, Thomas was a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

Marshall was the first black member of the Supreme Court; Thomas was the second.
The Senate approved Clarence Thomas’ nomination to the high court by a vote of 52-48 after a highly contentious confirmation hearing, History.com reported.
He appeared in court on October 23, 1991, at the age of 43.
During his tenure on the Supreme Court, Thomas has generally been associated with the conservative side of the Court.

The website Ballotpedia reported that Thomas’s Martin-Quinn score – (or MQ score, which refers to metrics used to measure the ideology of Supreme Court justices based on their voting records) – during the 2021–2022 term was 3.05, the most conservative than any other justice on the Court.
