Who is a ‘newbie’?
Rookie is defined by the league as a South African player aged 22 or younger on the day of the auction and who has never previously been contracted by an SA20 franchise.
Players who meet this criteria can be purchased during the regular auction phase. If not selected in the regular auction, they will be eligible for the Rookie Draft.
Rookie players have a set price, and each team has to sign one young player and this is deducted from their salary cap.
Who is the wildcard?
