“Create your own workout so it fits your needs, not the needs of some celebrity who doesn’t look like you at all, doesn’t move like you and has nothing to do with you,” Gunnar Peterson, a celebrity trainer who has worked with Mark Wahlberg, the Kardashians and many others, told Fox News Digital in a phone interview.

“Make your own workout,” he says, noting that you should uncover your “problem areas” and “focus your energy at the top of your workout on the area that’s calling you.”

It’s not where you exercise that matters, but how you spend your time exercising, whether it’s at home, in the gym, or in a class.

“I know people who have home gyms that are better than any gym,” Peterson said. Without that extensive setup at home, there are certain exercises that simply can’t be done.

“I’m a big believer in putting external load on the body. That’s going to require some weight, whether it’s a barbell, dumbbells, machines, water, pneumatics,” Peterson said.

Peterson’s go-to home equipment workout includes a set of power block dumbbells, three to four different bands, a piece of cardio of choice (which could be walking with a weight vest), plus something that allows you to do high-intensity interval training, like jump rope or a rower.

At the gym, there are so many distractions, such as a phone ringing in your pocket during a workout. At home, those same distractions can disrupt your workout. Doing your best to eliminate distractions during the time you set aside to focus on your body is crucial to success.

“You have to turn it off. Imagine you’re on an international flight with no Wi-Fi,” Peterson advised. “If you go on it with your phone, you’re going to be on your phone.”

“I have some clients who stick with it,” Peterson continues. “Then I have some who come in, put it on the counter, enter the gym, and they don’t take it at all. There’s just a complete difference in speed, intensity, and, essentially, results.”
