For various reasons, most of us have lost trust. Mainstream social media giantsWhich also includes their moderation decisions. How do we know if our posts are actually reaching our friends or followers? or if our post has reach being pressed Because of our political/ideological beliefs or background?

In the early days of the Web (often referred to as “Web1”) in the late 1990s, moderation was not a big deal. The Web was founded with a utopian vision and at the time we were generally more polite online. For the most part, we were interacting with people we knew in real life or with like-minded online communities and hobbyists. There were no armies of bots and trolls spreading chaos, funded by governments behind the scenes. were there no politicianPundits and miscreants are firing digital daggers and arrows at our bows. How times have changed.

Today, in what is commonly known as “Web2,” our newsfeeds are all the rage. Bigotry, prejudice, distasteful language, images and videos are flashing before our eyes.

When it comes to political discussion, Web2 is a mess. A 2023 Pew Research study found that “about 80% of people in the US said they believe social media has made people more divided in their political views,” and about 70% said the platforms “have made people more informed about politics.” I have become less civilized in the way I talk.”

The upcoming iteration of the web built on blockchain technology (known as “Web3”) offers no respite – its token moderation scheme leads to even deeper echo chambers.

Yet despite these threats, we should have the freedom to express ourselves without Big Brother’s heavy-handed muzzle smothering our tongues. How do we solve this puzzle in a way that satisfies all parties?

Assistant free speech theory And civil dialogue is vital to strengthening our republic. Only open discussion promotes the democratic process. As I often say, dissent is the backbone of a well-functioning democracy. American abolitionist and politician Frederick Douglass Said in 1860: “Suppressing free speech is a double mistake. It violates the rights of the listener as well as the speaker.”

Restoration Networking attempts to address core issues related to content moderation, protecting civility as well as supporting free speech principles. Imagine what our collective sigh of relief will be when this is achieved.

Here is the dilemma we want to solve. First, sites that abandon moderation altogether in the name of absolute freedom of expression are dead on arrival. They are inevitably filled with spam, pornography, hate speech, bullying, harassment, doxxing, and incitement to violence. This environment is not only dangerous; This also makes these sites unusable for most of us.

This has already happened on “anything goes” sites like 8Chan, which was shut down and later relaunched as 8kun. Another site, Secret, was shut down by its founder, who was disappointed with its content. mystery investors their money was returned,

Second, moderation provided by Meta, TikTok, Twitter/X and other mainstream giants remains flawed, biased and unreliable despite ongoing band-aids to fix it. A 2024 poll by Pew Research found that 83% of Americans – including a majority of conservatives and liberals alike – believe that social media giants “censor political viewpoints with which they disagree.”

Restoration Networking creates a unique new way to support authentic civil discourse, a vital space for well-functioning democracies. There are some simple rules for us as users, enforced by the site’s Trust and Safety team: no inciting violence, no bullying, no harassment, no spamming, no doxxing and no hateful posts. . The final rule will be defined clearly and narrowly by the site’s User Advisory Board in a way that stakeholders on both sides of the political aisle can agree to.

These rules allow people of all viewpoints to engage in heartfelt conversations about politics, health issues, diet, science, and lifestyle. For one (perhaps controversial) example, this means that we can always have lively conversations about the merits of vaccines. It also means that we will always have the freedom to sharply criticize our governments and political leaders. web and social media companies in china A perfect example of where we don’t want to go: These companies are completely Ban all images and mentions Winnie the Pooh, as some Chinese citizens have humorously used the honey-loving bear to mock leader Xi Jinping.

The approach we are adopting is not conservative or liberal. This is American and is the foundation of Restoration Networking in the spirit of civil discourse.
