New Delhi: After Mayank Yadav took over 1-21 T20I debut In Gwalior, former left-arm fast bowler of India RP Singh He believes that the explosive fast bowler fulfilled the criteria for which he was selected in the series against Bangladesh and is hopeful of seeing more impressive performances from him.
One of the highlights in India’s ongoing T20I series against Bangladesh was how Mayank would perform. In IPL 2024, Mayank left an indelible mark on everyone, showing impeccable accuracy in his lines and lengths, hitting speeds of over 150 kmph.
He won the Player of the Match award in his first two matches. Lucknow Super GiantsBut stomach tension soon sidelined him. After this Mayank spent time there National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru to recover and become match-fit by bowling eight to ten overs every day.
During his debut against Bangladesh in Gwalior, he bowled a maiden over and took his first international wicket of Mahmudullah. The second T20 match between India and Bangladesh to be held at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Wednesday will mark the wonderful homecoming of Mayank, a product of the prestigious Sonnett Club.
“When Mayank bowled a maiden over in his first over in international cricket, it showed that he was aware of his accuracy, which he monitored well, and how important it was along with pace. There are a lot of if-but-like questions in the mind of a budding player in the first match.
“So, I didn’t expect her performance to be very good. He lived up to the criteria for which he was selected for this series. In the first match, he bowled fast and then showed some accuracy. But there is still a lot to be improved in terms of performance and impact. Overall, according to me, his first match performance was good,” JioCinema and Sports18 expert Singh told IANS in a virtual interaction.
Most important for Mohammed Shami’s availability Border-Gavaskar Trophy Still uncertain, and Singh is of the opinion that Akash Deep will be the next preferred fast bowling option for India, he also cited the need for Mayank to gain more experience playing red-ball cricket at the domestic level.
“Aakash Deep is a better option for the Test series in Australia. His bowling style is better suited to seam-up balls in Australia. Mayank has pace and one aspect of fast bowling is that it should be fast. There are many variations and skills that he needs to develop gradually.
“Right now, Mayank is in the development stage. The bowling load in a test match is very high. Also, playing the longer format requires a lot of skill and patience. But there is still time for that. He still has time to play domestic cricket, which Akash Deep and Mohammed Shami have played a lot.
left arm fast bowler Arshdeep SinghHis performance, where he took 3-14 and struck twice in the power-play, helped India seal a seven-wicket win in Gwalior. Singh believes that Arshdeep will get more time playing Test cricket in the future, as his skills are more adept in the white-ball game.
“I still think there is not much difference between red ball and white ball bowling in the death overs. If the number of variations increases in white ball cricket, your patience increases in red ball cricket. Arshdeep has skill and can swing the ball both ways. They have variations that are more suitable for the shorter white ball format. I can see that he will take some more time to play Test cricket.
“It is not that there is any deficiency in them. He has good pace, he has variations and he has good length. But despite this, the feeling he gives is that he is an ideal bowler for the white ball game. He is a left arm fast bowler and always gets wickets. So I think his focus should be on white ball cricket for one and a half years and after that Arshdeep can play Test cricket.
The absence of Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah from the T20 series means there are many new faces in the Suryakumar Yadav-led team.
Additionally, a large number of these young players provide all-round skills, which Singh believes will help the Indian team establish a strong group of candidates to defend the T20 World Cup title on home soil in 2026. It is a conscious strategy.
“The aspect of developing a pool of players keeping in mind the defense of the 2026 T20 World Cup title is clearly visible here. with the head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav At the top, one can really see that they are building a bench of players who have done well in the IPL and impressive performances in the domestic circuit.
“When you look at players like Riyan Parag and Abhishek Sharma there, it makes sense that they are building players to fill the gaps and ensure a smooth transition to the shortest format after the senior players leave . I believe they are on the right track to achieve this.”
“I really believe that the captain, coach and selectors must have made a four-year plan to include more all-rounders in the Indian team in the shortest format. For example, the impact player rule exists only in the IPL, whereas there is no such rule in international cricket.
“Whereas in international cricket, the Indian team needs a lot of all-round options. More all-rounders in the Indian set-up means the balance of the team has become better and efforts to do so are going well at the moment,” Singh signed off.
