Two NATO members say Russian drones violated their airspace

Kyiv: two NATO members said on sunday russian drones violated their airspace, as one reportedly flew Romania During night time attacks on neighboring countries Ukraine While another plane crashed in the eastern region. Latvia Last day.
A drone entered Romanian territory in the early hours of Sunday. moscow Romania’s National Defence Ministry said “civilian targets and port infrastructure” were attacked across the Danube in Ukraine. It said Bucharest had deployed F-16 warplanes to monitor its airspace and issued a text alert to residents of two eastern regions.
It also said a possible “zone of impact” was being investigated in an uninhabited area on the Romanian-Ukrainian border. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
Later on Sunday, Latvian Defence Minister Andris Spruds said a Russian drone had come down near the town of Rezekne a day earlier, and had likely come into Latvia from the neighbouring country. Belarus,
Rezekne, home to more than 25,000 people, lies about 55 kilometers (34 miles) west of Russia and about 75 kilometers (47 miles) from Belarus, a close and dependent ally of the Kremlin.
While the intrusion into Latvian airspace appears to be a rare occurrence, Romania has confirmed finding drone fragments over its territory on several occasions since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, even in July this year.
Mircea Geoana, NATO’s outgoing deputy secretary general and Romania’s former top diplomat, said on Sunday morning that the military alliance condemns Russia’s violation of Romanian airspace. “Although we have no information indicating a deliberate attack by Russia against the Allies, these acts are irresponsible and potentially dangerous,” he wrote on social media platform X.
Latvia’s military similarly said on Sunday that there were no signs that Moscow or Minsk deliberately sent the drone into the country. In a public statement, the military said it had identified the crash site, and that an investigation was ongoing.
Latvian Defense Minister Spruds attempted to downplay the significance of the drone intrusion.
“I can confirm that there are no victims here and no one’s property was violated in any way,” Defence Minister Andris Spruds told Latvian radio on Sunday. He added that any risks in the incident were quickly eliminated: “Of course, this is a serious incident, because it once again reminds us what kind of neighbours we live next to.”
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrei Tsibiha said the incursion was “a reminder that the Russian Federation’s aggressive activities extend beyond Ukraine’s borders.”
“The collective response of the Allies must now be maximum support for Ukraine, in order to end (Russian aggression), save lives and restore peace in Europe,” Sibiha said in a post on X.
Civilians reported killed in Ukraine In Ukraine, two civilians were killed and four others wounded in overnight Russian air strikes on the northern city of Sumy, the regional military administration reported. Two children were among the injured, the administration said. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed later on Sunday that its forces attacked foreign pro-Kiev fighters in a village on the northern outskirts of Sumy. It was not immediately clear whether this was a reference to the same attack.
Also on Sunday, Ukraine’s General Staff said Russian troops continued air strikes on Sumy and surrounding areas and had dropped at least 16 devastating “glide bombs” in the province by midday. The regional prosecutor’s office said Russian forces bombed the city again during the day on Sunday, wounding a teenager and a civilian.
Three more women were killed on Sunday by Russian forces shelling a village in the eastern Donetsk region, governor Vadim Filyashkin said on the Telegram messaging app. Also, a woman was killed by Russian shelling on the outskirts of Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second city in the northeast, local authorities said.
Meanwhile, regional governor Filip Pronin said the death toll from a massive Russian missile attack on a military academy and a nearby hospital in the eastern city of Poltava on Tuesday had risen to 58. More than 320 people were injured.
Since launching a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in early 2022, the Russian military has repeatedly used missiles to destroy civilian targets, sometimes killing many people in a single attack.
Ukraine’s General Staff said Russian forces continued their month-long, difficult advance toward the city of Pokrovsk, and also stepped up attacks near the town of Kurakhov in the south.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said on Sunday that its troops had seized Novohrodivka, a small town located about 19 kilometers (11 miles) southeast of Pokrovsk. An update published by Ukrainian battlefield analysis site DeepState on Saturday evening said Russian forces “advanced” in Novohrodivka and seized Nevelske, a village located southeast of the Pokrovsk district.
Pokrovsk, which had a pre-war population of about 60,000, is one of Ukraine’s main defensive strongholds and a major logistics hub in the Donetsk region. Capturing it would affect Ukraine’s defense and supply routes, and move Russia closer to its stated goal of occupying the entire Donetsk region.
Berlin raises possibility of peace talks with Russia Also on Sunday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said he and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy agreed that Moscow should be included in a future peace conference aimed at ending its invasion of Ukraine.
“There will definitely be another peace conference, and the president (Zelensky) and I agree that Russia must be present at it,” Scholz told Germany’s ZDF public television.
At the last peace conference in Switzerland on June 15-16, 78 countries expressed support for Ukraine’s “territorial integrity,” but beyond that the way forward was unclear. Russia did not attend.
There was no immediate comment from Ukraine.
