“We are proud to have a strong and positive relationship with the Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) and other law enforcement agencies, and we believe the vast majority of officers serve the community with the highest character and a desire to protect all citizens,” the team said in part. “However, as the video released tonight perfectly demonstrates, there are some officers who misinterpret their responsibility and commitment to serve with power.

“While we applaud MDPD for taking the correct and necessary action to quickly release this footage, we also urge them to take equally swift and strong action against officers who engage in such abhorrent behavior.”

Miami-Dade Police Director Stephanie V. Daniels said Sunday that one of the detained officers had been placed on “administrative duties.”

The officer’s lawyers presented their case on Monday and demanded that their client be reinstated.

“Although we believe the decision to place our client on leave was premature, we respect Director Daniels’ call for a thorough review of the incident involving Mr. Tyreek Hill, which we fully support,” said attorneys Ignacio Alvarez of ALGO Law Firm and Israel Reyes of Reyes Law Firm. “We urge all parties to refrain from making public statements that may misrepresent our client’s actions and mislead the public regarding Mr. Hill’s detention.”

“We demand our client’s immediate reinstatement and a full, thorough and objective investigation, as also advocated by Director Daniels. Our client will have no further comment until this investigation is complete and the facts are fully revealed.”

Earlier Monday, the South Florida Police Benevolent Association defended the officers involved, saying Hill was “uncooperative.”

Police union president Steadman Stahl said Hill was taken into custody “for officer safety, as he was driving in a manner that placed himself and others at great risk.”

“Upon being stopped, Mr. Hill did not immediately cooperate with the officers on scene, per policy and for his immediate safety, Mr. Hill was placed in handcuffs,” the statement said. “Mr. Hill still did not cooperate, he refused to get on the ground and therefore was taken to the ground.”

Stahl said Hill was issued two traffic violation notices and that those who have had contact with police officers were reminded to “obey legitimate police commanders first and complain later.”
