You can read Backman’s books in any order, as each book tells its own story.
The only exception to this are the “Beartown” books, as there are three novels in this series.

“As I mentioned, I have kids and a dog, so my dreams of a reading experience are limited to being alone for 10 minutes at a time,” Backman told the New York Times. “And the thing is, when my kids were little, I got used to reading in very uncomfortable situations, like sitting on the bathroom floor while they were bathing or sitting on a narrow wooden bench in a gym waiting for a football game, so now I can’t be anywhere very comfortable because I’ll fall asleep.”

He added, “A hammock or a nice sofa? Forget about it. But a chair, albeit a little uncomfortable, on a balcony right above a very busy street would probably be my favorite. Also, I like reading in a room where my wife is also reading.”

The name change was simply a matter of setting. The original story of the book and the first film released in 2015 are set in Sweden, but the main character in the 2022 film lives in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
