The presidential race kicks off today for thousands of voters, as Wisconsin begins mailing ballots to eligible voters.

For Democrats, the goal is to keep turnout high in cities and surrounding areas by energizing black and suburban voters. Milwaukee and Madison have very high populations of deep-blue voters, and the counties those cities call home make up nearly a quarter of statewide turnout.

Derrick Van Orden was one of a handful of Republicans who won the seat in the midterm elections, and his district includes some blue-leaning areas like Eau Claire and La Crosse. How to vote in Wisconsin?

Register to Vote
Wisconsin allows voters to register online or by mail until October 16.
Voters who miss that date can also register on election day by printing their registration form, signing it, and submitting it, along with proof, to the municipal clerk or polling station.

Upcoming Early Voting Dates
Wisconsin is the first state to begin the election season in earnest, with absentee ballots sent to a large group of voters. Alabama and Kentucky began sending absentee ballots last week to those who have an excuse to vote absentee.
Tomorrow, Virginia will be the first state to allow its voters to vote in person, and seven other states will make absentee ballots available.
By the end of the month, 26 states and D.C. will have begun some form of voting.
